CNA Training in Alabama

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Alabama is expected to reach the 5 million mark for the state’s population by 2020. With an increase in population, there will also be a demand for skilled health care professionals, including certified nursing assistants. 

 The state of Alabama requires CNAs to have graduated from a state-accredited program. However, Alabama is a little more flexible than other states. Student CNAs can work without certification for four months under the conditions that they must be enrolled as a student while obtaining their certification. CNAs must be registered with the Alabama Nurse Aide Registry once they successfully pass the state exam. 

Alabama CNA Certification Requirements

There are a few requirements that must be met before someone can take a CNA class. These include:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Pass a background check
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrated basic writing, math and reading comprehension skills
  • A negative two-step TB test
  • Current immunization records
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds or more

Alabama CNA Training & Testing Costs 

To gain a CNA certification in the state of Alabama, you must pass a state-approved course. These courses may vary slightly in required hours but must have a minimum of 120 hours that’s split between classroom hours (minimum of 80) and hands-on CNA training (minimum of 40 hours). The combination of clinical and classroom training is designed for CNAs to be able to work for hospice, home health agencies, hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities.  

Certification costs vary depending on your location and program. Typically, CNA classes in Alabama will cost in the neighborhood of $800- $1500. 

There are several additional costs as you gain your CNA certification in Alabama to consider as well when preparing for certification. Additional costs for scrubs, blood pressure cuffs, textbooks, and state certification. The costs can add up; however, some schools offer flexible payment plans. CNA Training in Birmingham

Lawson State Community College. LSCC has two flexible tracks to choose from to qualify for certification. Offered at the Birmingham and Bessemer Campus, the two tracks are one for the home health aide certification and the other for the CNA certification. LSCC tuition can range up to approximately $1500. However, there are options for assistance with Federal Funding and tuition payment plans. 

CNA Training in Montgomery

Easterseals. Easterseals offers an intensive 5-week training course for approximately $1425. Located in central Alabama, this course fills up fast and is considered by most employers as top-notch training. This course offers tuition assistance and offers other resources for payment options. 

CNA Training in Mobile

Out of State CNAs

Alabama does allow for out of state CNAs to obtain certification in the state. The CNA must be in good standing from the state they are transferring from free from claims of abuse or misconduct. Two steps can be taken for the process:

  • Apply to an in-state nursing home and then transfer your CNA certification once you are actively working. 
  • Another option is to complete the required training in order to obtain a certification and take the exam.

CNA Renewal in Alabama

In order to remain active in the State of Alabama, you must renew your CNA certification through the Alabama Certified Nurse Aide Registry. All that is required is that you have at least 8 hours of practice for every two years. Volunteer work does not count, the eight hours must be compensated by an employer. Compensation that does not qualify includes assisted living facility, physician’s office, and a private home.
