Texas CNA Certification Requirements

Wondering how to become a CNA in Texas? Let’s look at the requirements. Training is usually a requirement for prospective CNA candidates, but some candidates may be exempt from coursework. Candidates may be exempt if:

  • they completed CNA training in another state
  • completed military training that is comparable to a civilian curriculum (100 hours of training is expected)
  • completed an approved RN or LVN program without obtaining a license
  • enrolled in an approved nursing program and can demonstrate competency

The basic prerequisites for earning a CNA certification in Texas include:

  • a clean background
  • age of at least 18 years
  • good health as shown by a doctor’s report
  • proof of immunization
  • negative TB test
  • current Healthcare Provider CPR card

Texas CNA Classes and Testing Costs

Unless candidates qualify for an exemption, they must pass a state-approved course before earning their CNA license in Texas. Pima Medical Institute: This is a 6-week long program that has a high passing rate. The program offers 130 hours of training and is taught by registered and experienced staff. 90 hours are devoted to classroom work and 40 hours are devoted to hands-on experience.

Lone Star College: This is a fast program and it does not offer credit. The program lasts for 108 hours. Students must complete an extra 8 hours of special training, which costs an additional $64. The tuition is $892, plus $17 for the insurance fee. Students must pay for the state competency exam fee. They should also budget for course materials such as texts and uniforms.

The Vocational Nursing Institute: Applicants for this program should provide evidence of high school graduation or GED equivalent. The course fee not only includes registration but also scrubs and the competency exam fee. Students must cover other supplies. The program costs $995.

CNA Classes in Corpus Christi

Del Mar College: This program will help students prepare for the competency exam. Students must enroll in two modules: NURA 1001 and NURA 1060. Out-of-State CNAs

CNAs certified out of the state may apply to become CNAs in Texas through reciprocity. Candidates must fill out Section One of the reciprocity application, make sure their certification is active, and await the registry response for 2-4 weeks. Candidates must also obtain a criminal background check. An ID copy is also required for the Texas Nurse Aide Registry.

Renewal

A CNA certificate in Texas does not expire. But CNAs must maintain active status in order to remain on the registry. In order to keep the certificate from expiring, CNAs must contact the registry every two years in order to provide proof of their employment. This will keep the CNA certification up-to-date.

How Much Does A CNA Make in Texas?

CNA salaries in Texas, like every state, can vary by location. The salaries may also vary by years of experience. For example, an entry-level CNA may only make $26,500 a year.
