CNA Training in Texas

Texas is a busy state that brings in over $50 billion from tourists visiting state parks and other points of interest. Hundreds of live music performances are given in Austin alone. The state is also famous for its ranchers and its food industry. With so many people taking part in the wealth that Texas has to offer, a well-supported medical staff is necessary for any kind of problem. CNAs have the opportunity to contribute greatly to medical staff in the state.

Prospective CNA candidates in Texas should be able to complete state-approved coursework and pass a competency exam. However, the state does not have minimal education requirements expected of candidates. Though no minimum requirements are expected, candidates should be able to demonstrate solid reading and writing competency before starting coursework.

Texas CNA Certification Requirements

Training is usually a requirement for prospective CNA candidates, but some candidates may be exempt from coursework. Candidates may be exempt if:

  • they completed CNA training in another state \
  • completed military training that is comparable to a civilian curriculum (100 hours of training is expected)
  • completed an approved RN or LVN program without obtaining a license
  • enrolled in an approved nursing program and can demonstrate competency

The basic prerequisites include:

  • a clean background
  • age of at least 18 years
  • good health as shown by a doctor’s report
  • proof of immunization
  • negative TB test
  • current Healthcare Provider CPR card

Texas CNA Training and Testing Costs

Unless candidates qualify for an exemption, they must pass a state-approved course. The curriculum must provide at least 75 hours of training, including 51 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of clinical experience. Training programs may last for up to 6 weeks. There are over 400 training programs in the state. After graduating from a program, candidates may take the competency exam.

Costs may vary depending on the location. However, classes may be free if candidates ask their employer to sponsor their education. Many nursing homes in the state sponsor CNA education as part of their recruitment. High school students may also qualify for free training. Otherwise, programs may cost anywhere between $400 to $1200. Some funds should be budgeted for uniforms, books, and other relevant materials.
