Maine CNA Certification Requirements

In order to qualify for a state-approved program you must meet the following criteria below:

  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age
  • Passing a background check
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or proof of a 9th-grade education
  • Demonstrated basic reading comprehension skills
  • Negative TB test
  • Current immunization records

Maine CNA Training & Testing Costs

In order to be CNA certified in the state of Maine, you must pass a state-approved program of 180 hours. These courses are a combination of 90 hours of classroom time, 20 hours of lab time and 70 hours of hands-on clinical skills.  With such thorough training, you will be able to work in skilled nursing, nursing homes, hospitals, and other medical facilities.  

The cost for certification ranges from $400-$1200 depending on the program you choose whether it be in a community college or a technical school.  The costs listed may not include books, uniforms, and equipment.  You may want to be sure to budget for these additional items. Bangor Adult EducationBAE offers great support to help you begin your path in healthcare.  Offering flexible hours and tuition assistance, if you are in the Bangor area, this would be a great program you may want to check out.

Washington County Community College. Located in Calias, Maine WCCC offers the CNA course as a stepping-stone if you wish to continue on in healthcare.  Flexible classes and tuition assistance are also available.  

Biddeford Adult Education. Offered on Wednesday Evenings and Saturday days, this CNA program is flexible.  Located in Biddeford, the cost of the program is $1,135.  This may not include books, uniforms, and equipment so be sure to budget for these additional items.

Saint John’s Valley Technical Center. Located in Frenchville, Maine this program offers a flexible schedule.

Out of State CNAs

Maine is different in regards to CNAs seeking licensure in the state. Those seeking licensure must meet the below qualifications:

  • Proof of certification from your home state
  • Proof of a 9th-grade minimum education
  • Proof of employment within the last 3 years, you must have worked at least 32 hours
  • Clean criminal record

CNA Renewal in Maine

Maine requires that you must have worked at least a minimum of 8 hours of a state-approved facility performing as a CNA  within the 2 year renewal period. 

How much does a CNA make in Maine?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average pay for a CNA hourly rate is $13.80 or $28,700 annually.  There are several factors that can affect this rate making it higher in some cases and lower in others such factors could be location and type of position.
