CNA Classes in Hawaii

Known as a destination island, Hawaii boast beautiful beaches and scenic views. Many people are choosing this state to retire. As a result there is an increase in demand for those in healthcare to include a Certified Nurses Aid. If you are thinking about starting a career in healthcare, Hawaii offers a great place to begin.

Although Hawaii is known as a vacation destination, make no mistake when it comes to healthcare and following regulations. There are strict guidelines that must be followed according to state regulations. CNAs can work in many different settings in Hawaii, such as hospitals, nursing homes, and home health agencies. The guidelines that must be followed are set in place by the Professional Vocational Licensing Branch of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. 

Hawaii CNA Certification Requirements

Not everyone can become a CNA in New York, or even apply for their CNA certification. There are a few requirements that must be met before someone can take a CNA class. These include:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Passing a background check
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Demonstrated basic reading comprehension skills by passing the TABE reading and math test for those who did not receive a high school diploma
  • Current physical stating no restrictions on lifting.
  • Negative TB test
  • Current immunization records
  • A clear background check
  • Valid State Identification

Hawaii CNA Program & Testing Costs

Programs that are state-accredited require a minimum of at least 100 hours of instruction. The time is split into two sections for the clinical aspect and the classroom. The clinical hours that must be met are a total of 30 and the classroom/lab time are 70 hours. You must complete the required hours and then you are eligible to take the state exam.

Hawaii has over 20 state-approved program sites. Each site varies in costs averaging between $1,100 to $1,500 with books, medical supplies and fees included. There are however many grants and scholarships to help with tuition. In some cases, some facilities offer classes with the hopes that you will work there upon graduation. The Red Cross. The Red Cross provides a program that is recognized by the State of Hawaii in offering top of the line classes. The Red Cross will also help in offering support for CNA test preparation.

Out of State CNAs

Before you transfer your Licensure, you will want to contact the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA). They will determine if you need to take the competency evaluation or if you will be able to have your Licensure directly placed on the registry. The DCCA will check your license for any negative marks due to abuse or other forms of mistreatment. 

CNA Renewal in Hawaii

In order to renew your license in Hawaii you must have met the following requirements:

  • Worked and received payment for 8 hours of service within the 24-month period.
  • You have 30 days to send in your application prior to it expiring
  • You will need to verify your employment
  • Meet the continuing education regulation of having at least 24 hours if you work for a non-medical employer

A CNA in Hawaii is at the higher end of the scale according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The average yearly salary is $38,650 or $18.58 per hour. However, this is only an average and rates can vary higher or lower depending on the location and scope of work.
