Alabama does allow for out of state CNAs to obtain certification in the state. The CNA must be in good standing from the state they are transferring with no claims of abuse or misconduct. Two steps can be taken for the process:

  • Apply to an in-state nursing home and then transfer your CNA certification once you are actively working.
  • Another option is to complete the required classes in order to obtain a certification and take the exam.

CNA Renewal in Alabama

In order to remain active in the State of Alabama, you must renew your CNA certification through the Alabama Certified Nurse Aide Registry. All that is required is that you have at least 8 hours of practice for every two years. Volunteer work does not count, the eight hours must be compensated by an employer. Compensation that does not qualify includes assisted living facility, physician’s office, and a private home.

If you have a name or address change, it is recommended that you should contact the registry in order to receive the latest updates, or in the event, they must contact you.
