What is the Wonderlic?
The Wonderlic test is a cognitive abilities test that is designed to measure the aptitude of the test taker and help the test administrator reach conclusions about a group of test takers. The Wonderlic has questions similar to what you would find on an IQ test.
How is the Wonderlic Scored?
Most versions of the test have 50 question that must be completed within 12 minutes. Test questions include logic and reasoning, grammar, and math questions.
Each question you answer correctly goes toward your score. So if you answer 25 out of 50 questions correctly, your Wonderlic score will be 25.
If you are taking a condensed or shortened version of the Wonderlic, your score will be calculated as if you took a 50 question test. For example, if you answered 15 out of 30 questions correctly, you answered 50% of the questions correctly. 50% of 50 is 25, so your Wonderlic score would be 25.
Why Do Nursing Programs Require the Wonderlic?
The Wonderlic test is used by many different types of organizations around the world – not just medical programs. There are typically two types of organizations that use the Wonderlic:
- Administration Departments of Education Institutions – Admission departments of high schools, colleges, and trade schools often use the Wonderlic to quickly and systematically assess candidates.
- Human Resource Departments of Companies – Like education institutions, they use the test as a means to quickly screen job applicants.
Education Institutions, like your nursing program, use the Wonderlic SLE Test while HR departments use the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test. Both tests are fairly similar in structure and offer similar types of questions.
The Wonderlic helps nursing programs predict a few things about their applicants:
- Are they a good fit for the program?
- How well they will do in classes
- The likelihood that they will complete the program
What Score Do I Need to Pass the Wonderlic?
There is no official pass or fail score on the Wonderlic test. The test is designed so that the average score of the general population out of 50 questions will be 20.
That said, it is a good idea to try to make it a goal to get a score that is at least above average for a nursing program. The average Wonderlic score for a nurse is 23, so it is likely a good goal to shoot for.
Can I Use a Calculator?
Technically, no you cannot use a calculator, but you may want to anyway.
There are different types of Wonderlic tests: Some are proctored, meaning someone is in the room monitoring the test takers, while other versions of the Wonderlic are not proctored. Obviously if you are taking a proctored version of the Wonderlic, don’t plan on using a calculator when taking a test. This also means that when you are practicing for the Wonderlic, you should avoid using a calculator as an aide.
Using a calculator definitely makes answering some of the math related questions easier to answer. If you are taking an online version of the test at home and it is not proctored, you may want to have a calculator handy just in case you need it. Before taking the test, check to see if your nursing program specifies if calculators are allowed or not. If they don’t mention that you cannot use a calculator, you can assume that they assume that most test takers will be using a calculator.
What Are Some Tips for Acing the Wonderlic?
The best thing that you can do to prepare for the Wonderlic is to take timed practice tests. You can find a Wonderlic SLE practice test at the top of this page.
Most people that do poorly on the Wonderlic test spend too much time on questions early on and then find themselves unable to complete the test in time. On the SLE test, you are given only 14.4 seconds to answer each question. The clock is not your friend, so it’s important to know exactly how much time you are able to spend on each question, and the best way to do that is by taking practice tests that are timed.
If you do find that you are not going to finish the test on time, you should guess on every single remaining question. You are not penalized for guessing wrong on questions – you can only be rewarded by guessing on questions correctly.
It may seem obvious, but you should also make sure that you get a good night sleep the night before taking the test and eat a full meal before taking the test. Studies show that this plays a huge role in improving concentration and test results.
