Getting Certified as a Nurse Aide in North Carolina

Getting certified as a nurse aide in North Carolina depends on whether an applicant is able to successfully participate in a CNA program approved by the state that consists of 75 hours of classroom and hands-on work. The next step is to get a passing score on both parts Pearson Vue CNA competency evaluation examination.

  • Listing Number (for Nurse Aide II)

Listing Renewal for CNAs in North Carolina

Nurse aides that wish to remain in the NC Registry must renew their license every 2 years to be allowed to continue working as one. Applicants will receive a renewal form 60 days before the expiration date of the license in question that must be sent back to the nurse registry along with proof that the candidate has performed at least 8 hours of paid nurse-related work in the last 2 years of the listing period.

CNA Listing Reinstatement in North Carolina

CNAs that have not met the requirements for license renewal are required to undergo reinstatement through retraining and retaking a competency exam to remain listed as active in the North Carolina Nurse Registry.

Transferring an Out-of-state CNA Certification to North Carolina

The North Carolina Nurse Registry does not accept out-of-state CNA certification transferring via endorsement or reciprocity. In order to be transferred to the NC Registry, applicants can either:

  • Complete a state-approved Nurse Aide I training

or

  • Pass the NC nurse aide exam endorsed by Pearson Vue.
