South Dakota Nurse Aide Registry

Becoming a New Nurse Aide in South Dakota

Candidates must perform the following steps in becoming a new nurse aide in the state of South Dakota:

  • Successful completion of a training program endorsed by the South Dakota Board of Nursing. Candidates are required to invest a minimum of 75 hours including 16 hours of clinical instruction.
  • Achieving a passing grade from both knowledge and practical portions of the competency evaluation test.

Candidates that are able to successfully meet the requirements mentioned above will gain the opportunity to be part of the CNA Registry in South Dakota.

Alternative Options for Candidates to Become CNAs in South Dakota

  • Nursing students are eligible for training.
  • Licensed nurses (LPNs and RNs) are eligible for instruction.
  • Healthcare providers such as medical assistants, EMTs, or respiratory therapists are however not eligible for classes.

A job applicant seeking to work as a CNA will need to provide proof of his/her certificate’s validity which can be accomplished by visiting this link https://doh.sd.gov/boards/nursing/NurseAid.aspx and providing the necessary details such as name, certification number, or social security number.

 

Renewing Certificates for Nurse Aides in South Dakota

The nurse aide registry in the state of South Dakota certifies its CNA for work within a 2-year period. Nurse aides that wish to continue working beyond this period are required to have their certification renewed. This process can be done by visiting the registry in person or through their website. The applicant must have performed at least twelve (12) hours of compensated work plus twelve (12) hours of training within the preceding 2-year certification period.

Reinstating a Lapsed CNA Certification in South Dakota

In the event that an applicant fails to meet the training and employment requirements for certification renewal mentioned above will be required to take a competency test in order to be reinstated to the state nurse registry. This rule also applies to CNA that are unable to renew their license within 90 days of expiration. However, candidates that are summoned for active military service are exempted.

CNA Certificate Transfer to SD through Endorsement

Candidates that are able to stay active while maintaining a good standing from the registry the certificate was originally obtained are eligible for transfer to the state of Dakota. An endorsement application will need to be submitted, one part to the SD registry while the other part needs to be sent to the state registry where the original certification was obtained. Take note of any applicable fees that may be needed.
